LISA WANG
Lisa Wang is a London and New York City-based image maker exploring themes of nonconvention and psychosexuality. With a background in psychology and classical training in the arts, she began photographing while receiving her degrees in the subject from Parsons School of Design and Central Saint Martins. Combining elements of glamour and the grotesque, Lisa authors images that are intersectional in their influence and idiosyncratic in their execution.

THE COURTESAN
"THE COURTESAN reflects upon the aftermath of transactional intimacy. In my time as a prostitute, I intuited a world of posturing and manipulation. Seduction being the principal tool of the trade, each interaction with my clientele was calculated for profit through conscious and unconscious methodology. My intimate life was wholly commodified, and the creation of a seductive persona offered me emotional protection via a work-life separation that splintered my personality into two: my authentic self, and the character I played in the midst of intimacy. In this way, power was afforded to me despite my vulnerable position. However, the character I played maintained walls around who I really was, making any opportunity for genuine connection impossible. I became trapped in a prison of my own making."
